Post civil war changes in the north and south were in stark contrast to each other. The South saw the end of the war and their way of life. The South was devastated by the war, and when faced with the freedom of their former slaves, they did all within their power to lock in white supremacy by creating black laws that made the former slaves, free in name only. The North moved into a new level of achievement as machine driven factories that began putting out products at a previously unheard of level. Many Americans continue to press westward to seek their fortunes in that largely undeveloped part of the country.
