After Sherman had finished with Georgia, he was happy to put the boot into South Carolina, the state that had started the war.

While aggressively pursuing the Confederates, he took time out to burn down the state capital, Columbia.

Their troubles only ended when Sherman crossed into North Carolina, and told his troops to go easy. The Tar-heel state had been very reluctant to secede.
