620,000 soldiers were killed during the American Civil War. There are no accurate figures of the number of civilians killed.

The Union lost about 360,000 soldiers and the Confederacy lost about 260,000 soldiers.

This answer may never be definite, but best guesses put military casualties at around 650,000; at least. The number of civilians is lower but should be around 200,000+. Remember that casualty lists include dead, wounded and missing. The civilian number also reflects casualties on civilians during the New York draft riots of 1863.

Before secession the United States had a population of 31 million. The Union had 23 million, and the South had only 9 million. 3.5 of that were slaves (around 150,000 were free blacks) and not counted as apart of the fighting men. The Union had 23 million who could fight, the South had only 5.5 million. The numbers were definitely in the Union favor.
