Generally speaking, Australian views ran in concert with the views of the US.
because they had different views
John W. Booth thought he was a tyrant. After he shot Lincoln, he jumped on the stage and yelled "sic semper tyrannis" (thus always to tyrants). Did you know that there is theory that Booth was never actually killed? Booth was from the South, and did not agree with Lincoln's views on slavery, and that all men are created equal.
Many people changed their views on war once they were confronted by the brutality and reality of death and destruction on the battlefield.
The Southern States believed that they had the right to secede because the Union had violated the US Constitution. Because of this the Southern States believed that the Republican dominated Congress and the views of President elect Lincoln would continue to do so, thus the Southern States believed that they had the right to leave the Union.
Even though Lincoln did not approve of slavery throughout his life, he realized it would be improbable that blacks and whites could live with equality, since they had to deal with too many prejudices. During the Lincoln-Douglas debate at Charleston on September 18, 1858, Lincoln stated: "I will say then that I am not, nor have I ever been in the favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races . . . There must be a position of superior and inferior, and I... am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race ... I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position that the negroe should be deprived everything." It must be remembered also that an abolitionist could not have been elected president.
Abraham Lincoln was raised by his father who was a strict Baptist and did not believe in slavery. His views and the encounters Lincoln had with slaves themselves influenced his views on slavery.
All of his views were liberal.
Of course. They had nothing against Lincoln the person, but they hated his political views.
When Lincoln was elected president in 1860, his views on slavery were already known and included:

It was a speech that would advise both the South and the North that he wasn't on either side, but he saw both their point of views. When giving his address he was very careful as to no state something that would cause more ambiguity. In order for him to preserve his beloved Union, he needed the support from both sides, slavery being their main issue for the confederates and the unionists. Lincoln's main issue was to preserve the Union, not slavery, in one of his speeches he state that if he needed to free all the slaves he would do it, if he needed to free some slaves but not others he would do it, and if he had to maintain slavery he would do it, in order to "preserve the union." repeated his commitment not to interfere with slavery where it already existed.
lincoln
The Lincoln and Douglas debates in 1858, were extensively covered by newspapers in both the North and the South. Northerners followed the debates and by doing so, brought to national attention the views of Abraham Lincoln. Abolitionists in the North were impressed with Abraham Lincoln's views on slavery.
Although die-hard "lost cause" modern confederates don't like it, Lincoln was a moderate on tariffs until the War required higher tariffs to finance it. Lincoln was originally a Whig and a Midwesterner where moderate tariffs were the accepted view. The fact that everyone knows Lincoln's views on slavery but almost no one correctly knows his views on tariffs helps to demonstrate that the Civil War was not about tariffs.
Lincoln was at first undecided about slavery. Later on, his views were that all men were created equal and slavery had not place in the US.
