For the US: Fighting a relentless and determined enemy. For the men: Mud during the rainy season; waist deep mud 24/7 in the Mekong Delta; mosquitos 24/7; snakes and leeches alot (not quite 24/7); eating cold canned food (C rations) on a daily basis. Sleeping whenever you can, fighting occurred mostly at night. Sleeping in mud. Sleeping in rain. Always wet (24/7). No toilets for weeks at a time. Brushing your teeth in a creek, or a beer or soda can full of river water. Bathing in a creek/river, washing your clothes (uniform) while you're wearing it.
Some "construction workers (hard hats)" made the news during the war, supporting the fighting men in Vietnam; some muscle was used during this support.

Some difficulties I encountered during my major duties included managing conflicting priorities, dealing with unexpected challenges or setbacks, and communicating effectively with team members or stakeholders. These situations required adaptability, problem-solving skills, and clear communication to overcome.
Some servicemen were, some weren't, just like anybody and anything else. Women were auxiliaries (WACs & WAVEs), and not part of the US military fighting strength in WWII thru Vietnam (and they were all volunteers).
