Why did president Johnson believed that it was important for the US to win in Vietnam?

He feared a communist takeover in Southeast Asia if the United States left Vietnam. He believed in the plausibility of the domino theory; that Communism would continue to spread if allowed to move unchecked throughout the world. His decided that it was less costly to escalate the war and get it over with. Unfortunately, he was wrong. Once the US was deeply into the war, he did not want to lose, knowing that it would weaken US prestige in the world and with the American people to give up without winning anything. He believed in the domino theory.

What is domino affect?

The domino Effect is a phenomenon where a chain of consequences is created by a single event. As in a line of dominos, where 1 domino is struck, others fall as a consequence of the original action. As it pertains to the Vietnam war, the domino effect was the theory that the US government used to justify its intervention in Vietnam. The position of the pro-war, anti-communist advisers in the government was that if Vietnam was allowed to "fall" to communism, this would set off a 'domino effect' whereby first neighboring countries such as Laos, Cambodia and Thailand would fall into communist revolution, and by extension countries further afield would be overtaken as the global communist revolutionary movement gained momentum. According to this line of thinking, to stop communism in Vietnam was to stop the world from falling into communist control. This theory is disproved, as we know Communist North Vietnam defeated US forces, but this did not result in a domino effect of neighboring countries becoming communist.

Because of the Domino Theory what kind of foreign policy did the US have?

The domino theory supported an interventionist foreign policy. The US feared to allow any single nation to become communist since that was expect to lead to a whole series of communist take overs. As it turns out, the domino theory was completely wrong. Vietnam did eventually become communist (and remains communist to this day, even after the fall of the Soviet Union) but no other countries became communist as a result, and indeed, global communism is almost extinct.
