Many answers would be correct depending upon the views of the specific man, the state, the Confederacy.
Many men believed they were fighting for their right to remove themselves from the Federal government which they felt had become tyrannical. Some fought to defend their home and preserve their honor in face of an invading foe. Some men and certainly some states went to war only after Lincoln had issued a call for troops to invade the South and put down the rebellion. The Confederacy fought because it was in the best political and economic interests to remove itself from encumbrance of the North.
