The Sioux (a bubble glassed whirlybird seen on the televison program MASH) was amongst the very first choppers used in Vietnam, followed by the CH-21 Shawnee and CH-34 Choctaw (Marine/Navy version was called the Sea Horse). All US Army birds are named after Indian tribes, except for the AH-1 Cobra (the original Cobra).

All US birds had a combat role; or else they wouldn't have been there. There primary missions were reconnaissance (scouting) & artillery adjustment (called spotting); then medivac (radio call-sign was dustoff) & supply.

As the war progressed, evolution took over. Helicopters became war machines; the Cobra and the Huey Gunship (UH-1 Iroquois).

Those two machines evolved into today's Apache and Blackhawk.

Why was the helicopter and important invention?

Helicopters were an important military invention because they enabled direct air transport without needing a runway. They were thus able to act as transports for the wounded in the Korean war and later in Vietnam from the front line directly to military emergency hospitals. This undoubtedly saved the lives of thousands of injured soldiers. ( The TV series 'MASH' is a great depiction of this ) . In Vietnam helicopters were more advanced and by then used to land troops in front line locations and in jungle and hilly areas where fixed wing aircraft could not operate. By the end of Vietnam helicopters were also acting in an assault role, able to operate in areas where jet fighters were relatively useless. In civilian use helicopters became rescue machines for shipping and very useful in many aspects of construction such as helping with erecting power pylons, logging and fire-fighting.

In 1965 your role in what country went from advisory to combat?

In January of 1965, the United States first deployed a combat unit to South Vietnam with the mission to protect American advisers on the ground there. Despite protests from other nations, as well as within the United States itself, American forces were gradually built up there for the rest of the year, clearly marking a move from "advisory" to "active military" support.

What is the attack cargo helicopter for?

You're referring to a helicopter gunship. Made popular in Vietnam, the French actually employed them first, mounting weapons onto H-21 and H-19 helicopters to provide close air support. This was done as the lighter helicopters of the time did not have enough power to sufficiently mount and carry weapons. These came about before dedicated attack helicopters made their appearance, and were replaced in the gunship role by those dedicated attack helicopters.

Role of hellicopters in the Vietnam war?

Vietnam was history's first war with the helicopter as a primary attack and infantry carrying aircraft. The AH-1 Cobra (AH=Attack Helicopter) was America's first purpose built & combat fielded attack helicopter. Helicopters did practically everything: Medi-vaced wounded men; attacked with mini-guns, attacked with 2.75 inch rockets; attacked with machine guns; transported artillery; transported armored vehicles; recovered downed aircraft; transported riverine boats; performed re-supply functions in the field with water containers, fuel containers, spare parts, etc. Most important of all, helicopters formed the US Army's new type of infantry: The Airmobile Divisions, akin to WWII's Airborne Divisions (which were a new invention during WWII).
