Auschwitz was the largest of Nazi Germany's concentration camps. Located in German-occupied southern Poland, it took its name from the nearby town of Oświęcim (Auschwitzin German), situated about 50 kilometers west of Kraków and 286 kilometers from Warsaw. Beginning in 1940, Nazi Germany built several concentration camps and an extermination camp in the area, which at the time was under German occupation. Birkenau, also known as Auschwitz 2, is the death camp in which the most people were killed. If memory serves Birkenau had 5 crematoriums in which were also gas chambers. Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals and the other people that the Nazi party was persecuting were brought in on trains, right insideBirkenau, disembarked and were immediately taken to the gas chambers.
