Although the first shots of the Civil War were in Charleston, South Carolina when the Confederacy bombarded Fort Sumter, the first major battle was near Manasses, Virginia. Much of the battle took place around the Mclean family farm. The Confederates used the Mclean house as an observation post and headquarters. After the battle, Wilmer Mclean decided to sell his farm and move to a safer place further south, a quiet little county seat called Appomatox. Four years later, Lee and Grant met in his parlor to negotiate the surrender. Thus the war began in his front yard and ended in his living room. Michael Montagne
