The column for Lord Admiral Nelson was erected there in commemoration of his famous victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Trafalgar Square was designed by John Nash and constructed in the 1830s, on the site that was originally the mews for royal hawks and then royal stables.
Lord Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) In October 1805 he destroyed the combined French and Spanish fleet off Cape Trafalgar. He was killed during the battle.

Admiral Lord Nelson is the name of the statue in Trafalgar Square.
Trafalgar Square was built to celebrate the naval victory of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It has a centre piece of two fountains and a plinth with a statue of Nelson at the top. This is known as Nelson's Column and is now a major tourist attraction in London.
