South was depending too much on cotton.And I think that they needed a new investment which would explain why they depended on the cotton.

the northern economy was based on industry and the south was based on agriculture and so the north would buy raw cotton from the south and reprocess and sell it

The north depended on the south for cotton because they could not get it anywhere else
