The Great Plains region of the US runs from Montana and the Dakotas down through central Texas (west of the Mississippi but east of the Rockies). The region is characterized by flat land and extreme weather. In Texas specifically, the Great Plains spreads from the Panhandle down through central Texas. (The panhandle of Texas is the large square-like form that juts out to the north on the border of Oklahoma.) Some major cities in the Great Plains region include: Austin, Midland, San Angelo, Lubbock, Odessa, and Amarillo.
