In the beginning the settlers at Jamestown developed trade relationships and had good interactions with the Powhatan Indians. In 1608 however; relations became hostile as the Indians came to realize the intent to make it a completely English colony.

The story we know is not true. Actually the colonist landed in an area of 14,000 Native Americans and in the worse land in the area. Powhatan pretty much left them alone. I think he figured that they would die from the bad water and disease . He was fairly right. Within 6 months there were only 34 men left alive of the 104 who came. It wasn't until after his death that the brother of Powhatan attacked the colony. The story about Smith is also not true. He did NOT save Jamestown. He was only there a very few months and he lied about his contribution to the settlement in a book he wrote several years later. He also made up the story about Pocahontas and she died young so couldn't refute his story. The man who did save Jamestown was the husband of Pocahontas and gave tobacco seeds to the colony. That was John Rolfe.

Jamestown did not have the best relationship with the Native Americans. The people in Jamestown had a poor view of the uncivilized way the Natives lived.

They helped them a lot. It was good until the first generation died and then the whites tried to rebel against the Natives. Then there was King Philip's war.

Why didn't the Jamestown settlers get along with their neighbors?

The colony Jamestown struggled at first because of three main reasons, the location, leadership, and charter. The location was a very big problem. Many colonist died offfrom disease caused by misquotes Jamestown was located on a swamp, thus the misquotes. The colonist were fighting with the natives and there was a scarce amount of food. Leadership was a problem because Captian John Smith left the colony and went back to England After he left there were 13 men in control. that got way out of hand. With no woman around the house cleaning got to be a problem and no one could establish order. And again the colonist were fighting with the natives. One of the reasons why there wasn't enough food was because the Virginia Co. didn't know how much food actually got there. Some got spoiled in the ship ride there, some got eaten by the crew arriving to Jamestown and what was left didn't supply for the amount it was meant for. Even though Jamestown had a lot of hardships through history they survived the worst.
