Separation of powers is the principle of American government whereby constitutional authority is distributed among three braches of government--the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. Each has their own powers and can check the powers of the other two branches. The Constitution set up each branch in a separate Article of the Constitution.
There is also a separation of power among the US states

The Separation of Powers was an idea that came from john Locke, which the U.S. Government is based off of. It includes three branches of government the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative Branch. The idea of Separation of Powers is to prevent any government from abusing people rights.
