To keep it brief and concise let's just take a look at some of the North American history and the history of the United States and see how it affects us today. In the 15th Century Christopher Columbus found the continent of North America which was occupied by primitive indigenous people. By the 17th Century British puritans and pilgrims had settled in North America for new way of life. By the 18th Century England, Spain and France and the Dutch and Portuguese all had colonies in North America. The British colonists were plotting their independence and ultimately fought a revolutionary war and defeated England gaining independence. By the 19th Century the newly formed government known as the United States of America embraced the idea of "manifest destiny" and expanded from thirteen states to more than 40 states. While this expansion was happening radical changes were being made in terms of abolition of slavery which led to a civil war between the United States. After the civil war expansion continued as states that relied heavily on slave labor redefined how they used resources the newly emancipated slaves struggled to redefine their own existence. Prejudice and racist attitudes, and an unfortunate botching up of legalities by the government left many freed slaves people without rights, people without homes and people without respect.

The industrial revolution which began in Europe earlier was now in full swing in the United States as the advent of trains, steam engines, piston engines and the discovery of abundant oil brought the United States untold prosperity. There were many people who lived in America at this time who prospered greatly and even more people who suffered poverty. The factories built by industrialist created massive low pay jobs that required much of an employees time. The hopeless situation of selling personal labor for a minimal paycheck while your employers prosper in unimaginable ways gave rise to the interest of such economic philosophies as communism and socialism. People such as Karl Marx, who is a historical figure who has affected your life in immeasurable ways, had a huge influence on the labor movements of the 19th and twentieth century in the United States.

In the twentieth century there were two world wars, both of which led to unprecedented powers grabbed by the federal government, which directly led to the United States becoming a "Super Power" in the world today. For good or for bad these are just a very few historical events that have affected each and every one of us today. If you would like to go back even further than American history try going back more than two thousand years ago in the Roman occupied lands of Palestine. Ever hear of a man named Jesus Christ? Whatever a persons beliefs about Jesus of Nazareth, his influence on the world today is undeniable. You don't have to belief in Christian dogma in order to know that Jesus Christ has affected you.
