Nearly 1,000 people on the Canadian side died

----------------------------

It was a brutal battle. Of the more than 6,000 troops, 5,000 were Canadian. We suffered huge losses, 907 killed, 1,947 taken prisoner. We lost more planes than any other day in the war. Total killed were about 1,800 including German losses.

The only up side was that the Germans were able to kill so many of us, so easily they did not believe we would ever try something like that again. That made it easier when we landed at Juno on D-Day.
