As a consequence, between the heir to the throne , Prince of Wales, and the government of the day, the Prince of Wales was appointment 'Prince Regent' , in order to conduct the affairs of state. The period between 1812 and 1820 is known as the Regency Period. In 1820 King George (III) died , and the Prince Regent ascended the throne as King George (IV). NB King George(III) was nicknamed ' Farmer George' , because of his keen interest in matters agricultural. King George (IV) was nicknamed 'Prinny' because of his excessive and grotesque habits. He made an illegal marriage to a Mrs. Fitzherbert , an Irish Catholic Lady. Thereby he left no legitimate heir to the throne, and was suceded by his brother. King William (IV), was the brother.
