in the 1920s, the peak, they had control of egypt, canada, the bahamas, south africa, sudan, ireland, New Zealand, australia, india and new guinea to name a few. that's why english today is the second most spoken language in the world, including in the united states. the british control in the colonies in the 1700s brought many english speakers to the modern day east coast, same with in australia, South Africa, new zealand, etc.
however, the two world wars put a heavy toll on the empire, and between 1945 and 1965, they went from having 700 million people under their control to about 5 million, mostly in Hong Kong, which was only still a territory of england due to an agreement signed over half a century earlier. by 1989 it had no more colonies in africa, and its 99 year lease agreement with the chinese concerning hong kong was set to end in mid june 1997.
today, england has several overseas territories scattered around the world, including bermuda, the british virgin islands, the cayman islands, and a dozen or so other colonies, none of which with high populations, mostly islands.
