Well they lived in their homes for a very long time till in 1820 they met Jedidiah Smith fur trapper. Him and some other fur trappers stayed at the Maidus camp for roughly 6 months. Then the word spread more and more fur trappers were coming to the Maidu camp. Many Maidu were dying from malaria. About 800. Then guess what they found gold. So more and more people came in. So their natural food sources were spread very thin. They were now dying from more diseases like phenomna, cholearah, and influenza. So later the government drove the Maidu away from their ancestors foothills to a over packed reserve. Round valley reservation. Many knew that when winter came they were going to starve so some left the reserve and were taken in just for the winter and sent home. But along the way 430 were held prisoners of war, 277 survived and there were 461 to start.
