Millions of people were persecuted in the violent factional struggles that ensued across the country, and suffered a wide range of abuses including public humiliation, arbitrary imprisonment, torture, sustained harassment, and seizure of property.
The "Great Leap Forward" resulted in famine. Officials reported increased production, even when there was none. Each level the data moved up in the party, a little more massaging added to the "success". Hence Mao was told there had indeed been a great leap forward, but alas there was not enough food to eat and millions went without.
The "Cultural Revolution" resulted in a massive change in Chinese Culture. After that no one trusted another like before. Before people would help each other, even strangers.
Mao was later ruled as being 70% right, 30% wrong. Perhaps the requirements for a successful leader of a revolution, and the successful leader of a country, are different.

After the 1911 Revolution, and the death of Sun Yat-sen's people stopped all their revoluntionary activity. China was also having internal unrest, warlords divided china hoping to be the next ruler. Which resulted in another revoluntion, where Mao Zedong comes along and China becomes communist.
