In January 1649, Charles I was charged with high treason, against the people of England. His trial began on 20 January, but he refused to answer the charges, as he did not recognise the authority of the Court. However, he was found guilty of the charges and sentenced to death. The King bravely went to his death, and was beheaded on a scaffold platform outside the Banqueting House, Whitehall, London, on 30 January 1649.
