Answer Edward VIII, King of Great Britain, King of Ireland and Emperor of India, became King on the death of his father, King George V, although he was never crowned. He wanted to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, but his wishes were opposed by the government who felt that the British people would not accept her as Queen. Rather than lose Mrs Simpson he abdicated the crown on 11th December 1936 and was succeeded by his brother who became King George VI.
