Good question. He used his experience from being in the British army to train the Continental Army. He was not exactly the best person to train them, but he helped them greatly.

George Washington was the Commander-In-Chief of the Continental Army, he supplied food, commissioned his officers to ambush and prepare for certain battles and helped win the French and Indian War. George Washington was basically an Administrator, he was still a General but an higher authority.

In general terms, the American Continental Army was disorganized and poorly trained in military maneuvers when George Washington took charge. The American volunteers were generally willing to learn, and they were quite skilled as individual marksmen, yet Washington faced the stiff task of turning them into well-drilled, competent, reliable fighting units.

George Washington changed the US by becoming a father, and helping other people such as slaves, the poor, and blacks depending on whether or not they were slaves.
