Well, the first document of America was the Articles of Confederation which gave the President no power and Congress all of it. But then they realized that there was no strong central government so they made the Constitution. The Constitution gave the right for people to vote for the president and members of congress every 2,4,6 years depending on the office you took. Congress can impeach the president at any time with a 2/3 majority vote, I think. But, it really was George Washington who made the president's job not for life. If you look on a timeline of presidents you will see he served 2 terms. Well he said that more then 2 would make him too powerful, after that no person ever ran for president more then 2 terms, except for Franklin Roosevelt who ran and won 3 times until he died, after that there was an amendment added to the Constitution where you can not run more then 2 times, and one group of people can gain too much power. If you look in history the Republican Democrats (democrats of the early 19th century and late 18th century) destroyed the federalist party (republicans of the early 19th century and late 18th century).
