Maps contain many colors. Here are the typical ones:

A. black; for cities, for the most part;

B. yellow; for areas outside the main section of a map. Thus for a map of Virginia, the yellow areas surrounding Virginia are colored yellow to show the surrounding parts of this State;

C. red; small highways are designated in red, major ones can be colored gray;

D. green; To designate forest and mountain areas; and

E. blue; to designate waterways, oceans & lakes.
