There were many new technologies used in the Civil war. They included the blockades, total war, new gun designs, use of the telegraph for quick communication while in battle, submarines, land mines, grenades, observation balloons, repeating guns, and ironclads. Most of these were not used very often.

1. US Civil War's first assault rifle; the Spencer and Henry repeating rifles (when everyone else used muzzle loaders).

2. Gatling guns were available, but seldom used; too new & not uniformily trusted.

3. First "successful" sinking for a submarine (but the first sub used in war, the Revolutionary War's "Turtle" was the first).

4. Trains were used for troop movements.

With the possible exception of wireless; balloons (aerial reconnaissance), trench warfare, and biological warfare had been used in previous conflicts, they were NOT new.

The majority of the technology used to fight the Revolutionary War was not new, but it still worked well. Mortars and cannons were common weapons, as were muskets. But one interesting new piece of technology was the first submarine. Called the "American Turtle" and invented by David Bushnell, this invention was designed to submerge and then direct an explosive at an enemy ship. By most accounts, it was not able to perform as well as its inventor hoped, but it demonstrated that with further development, submarine warfare would become an effective method for attacking enemy vessels.

The Gatling gun was one innovation that helped small regiments to have more firepower, as it could fire continuously when cranked.
