Tikal was one of the largest of the classic Maya cities, and capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. The name Tikal is a modern one given to the site by explorers. The Mayan naming is thought to be Yax Mutul. Originally, the site was ideal for agriculture and trade, so a city rising from settlements in the area was a natural progression.
