Castles changed because the design improved. Though the later ones took longer and were more expensive to build, they were much better as forts. The first castles were of the motte and bailey type, built of earthworks and wood. They did not last very long, and important parts of the defenses could be overpowered easily or burned down.

Later castles were more strongly built, usually of stone, and had more elaborate defenses. They could withstand both time and assault better.

because theres alot of wars and the wall including the castle was all wooden therefor making it pointless cause it could rot in the hot and cold weather and it could leak fro the ceiling a rainy day ) and there enemies could easily burn it down there is also other reasons such as animals could chew threw the walls and termites were possible back in the middle ages day and etc. thank you.....hope i helped by the way i heard this from my teacher so its guaranteed right thank you

They were developed as safe and strong places to live for rulers of all kinds back in the days before cannons were invented. Castles could withstand fairly heavy and large attacks from enemy forces and so were excellent places to live for Kings and Queens and Dukes and Lords and the like.
