They grew many kinds of fruits, and vegetables such as carrots, peas, and beans. Beets were grown in some places to make sugar, the other sweetener being honey from both wild and domesticated bees. Most of the meat was wild game, except where there were large herds of pigs or cows (cows were mostly for dairy products, or as beasts of burden). Chickens were already a staple of the European diet during the Roman Empire.
