Every men over 20 was randomly selected, if you were selected you have to serve in a war for 1 year, otherwise you may put in to jail.

Men who were married with children were placed at the bottom of the list, with married men coming in next. During that year there was huge rush for couples to get married so the man did not get sent away. The conscription did not involve students, however when the war escalated the suggestion for students to be added to the conscription angered alot of people.

It was even one of the reasons that contributed to the creation of the major Anti-War Protest Movement in the US. Muhammad Ali also burnt his draft card publicly.
