Yes, due to the communist in the North Vietnam Australia fear of the communist, so Australia use forward defence (fight communist in other country instead of Australia) by using conscription. Every men over 20 was randomly selected, if you were selected you have to serve in a war for 1 year, otherwise you may put in to jail.

conscription was introduced for Vietnam War service in 1964; it was highly unpopular, and keeping his campaign promise ended by PM Gough Whitlam in December 1972.

President Nixon ended conscription in the USA a few months later

Yes.

Men who were married with children were placed at the bottom of the list, with married men coming in next. During that year there was huge rush for couples to get married so the man did not get sent away. The conscription did not involve students, however when the war escalated the suggestion for students to be added to the conscription angered alot of people.

It was even one of the reasons that contributed to the creation of the major Anti-War Protest Movement in the US. Muhammad Ali also burnt his draft card publicly.

Australia's controversy mirrored the US's controversy during the war, but on a lesser scale, due to the relative population of each country.
