Airmen's maps are in degrees. Civilian maps go by TS (Townships). US Army ground maps go by grid coordinates. Quick Town-GI slang for Quang Tri, is in I Corps; QL (Highway) 9 runs into it from the east & QL 1 runs into from the South (during the war). Get a map showing grids; and read the numbers from the right and up (don't read the LINES, read the numbers), if you the read the lines, you'll get the wrong grid coordinates. Four numbers (GC-1234) will get you within one thousand meters...each square is one click (klick) 1,000 meters.

What is another name of the Hill 362 - Quang Tri - Vietnam?

Probably, the most famous hill in the QT area is the "Rockpile" just off of Highway 9 (QL 9). Moving west from QT on Hwy 9 (was a dirt road in the war), pass old Firebase (Camp) Carroll (Camp Carroll had a battery of 155mm Self Propelled Guns stationed there), continue on and "Rockpile" was on the right; roughly five hundred yards off the road. Behind the "Rockpile" was the "Razerbacks" (as some men have said). Maybe a mile or two past Rockpile, on the left was Firebase Vandergrift, used to have a battery of 155mm split trailed field guns (towed field pieces) stationed there. Somewhere around this area was KHE SANH, the old siege area involving the US Marines, President Johnson, and NVA General Giap back in '68. Further west a few more miles was Firebase Lang Vei (over run by NVA PT-76 tanks in '68...was a Green Beret outpost)...Lang Vei sits on the border of Laos, by less than a mile. Unless "your" mountain is on the coast, or near the DMZ (US Army Outposts A-4 and C-2, and known by the US Marines as Con Thien), all of which appeared to be rather flat, when compared to the western regions as described in the first paragraph; then the most famous hill (mountain) in the QT area was ROCKPILE.

Douglas aircraft used in Vietnam War?

Douglas had two famous aircraft in the Vietnam War: 1. A-1 Skyraider, a propeller driven WWII "designed" dive bomber/torpedo plane, which never saw service in WWII...but did fight in the Korean War as a navy blue painted fighter/bomber; and the Vietnam War as a camoflaged painted fighter bomber for the USAF and a regular grey/whitish fighter bomber for the USN. Depicted in the film, "Rescue Dawn" (based on a true story). About 3,000 A-1's were built, and about 266 Skyraiders were lost in the Vietnam War. 2. A-4 Skyhawk, a single jet engine attack aircraft, first entering US service in about 1954. Nicknamed the "scooter", among other names, it was well liked because it was small (wing-span about 26') which allowed MORE jets to be carried aboard carriers. Reportedly easy to fly, easy to maintain, and cheap to build. Used strictly by the USN/USMC during the Vietnam War, nearly 3,000 were built and about 362 were lost during the war. The A-7 Corsair II would replace the A-4. The A7 was the only single seat jet fighter/bomber that was designed, built, and sent directly into combat in Vietnam during the 1960's. All of the others had been designed or built during the 1950's. In addition, the A7 was used by BOTH the USAF and the USN in the Vietnam War.

Was the B-52 bomber used in the Vietnam War?

All US jet fighters such as the F100 Super Sabre, F102 Delta Dagger, F104 Starfighter, F8 Crusader, F4 Phantom were ultimately used as fighter BOMBERS. The F101 Voodoo was used primarily as a reconnaissance jet. The A7 Corsair was designed, built, and deployed in the 1960's directly into combat in Vietnam. The F105 Thunderchief was designed as a fighter/bomber, the largest single engine jet bomber in the US inventory and the only such jet that could carry an atomic weapon completely concealed within it's fuselage. Only 833 F105's were built and nearly 400 of them were lost in the war, consequently the F4 Phantom took over much of the Thud's duties. Traditional US jet bombers used in Vietnam were: B57 Canberra (twin jet engines); the A6 Intruder, US Navy all weather medium bomber; and the B52 Stratofortress heavy bomber (eight jet engines). The US Navy A4 Skyhawk and the USAF F100 Super Sabre saw extensive action in the war which is reflected in their losses: 362 A4's were lost, and 242 Super Sabre's were lost in the war. The propeller driven single engine A1 Skyraider also saw alot of action, 266 were lost in the war. Probably the most un-sung jet fighter (bomber) was the F100 Super Sabre; it fought from 1962 until 1971. Conducting bombing missions in Laos, Cambodia, North Vietnam, and South Vietnam. The F100 has unfortunately been heavily overshadowed by the F4 Phantom...as have been most of the other US jet fighter bombers.

Helicopters would be a separate list.

How does the Spitfire fly?

The engines of early models of Spitfires were fitted with carburettors which affected their ability to climb, also the early engines were not as powerful as later in the war. The service ceiling of a Mk1a was only 34,000 feet and although it could go higher it would not be able to manoeuvre properly. The Mk22 at the end of WW2 had an engine almost twice as powerful with fuel injectors which gave a service ceiling of over 43,000 feet. The Mk14e could reach 44,500 feet but was a lighter aircraft and the high altitude version of the Mk9 had a service ceiling of 45,000 feet.

How can you approach to Hill 362 - Qang Tri - Vietnam?

First locate it on the map. If it's near QT or Dong Ha, or even Old Firebase Carroll, there will be a dirt road leading up to it (unless it's the Rockpile...only a foot trail could traverse that hilltop).
