A renaissance man or polymath is a person who is skilled in multiple fields or multiple disciplines, and who has a broad base of knowledge. The term renaissance man is largely based on the various artists and scholars of the European Renaissance, (starting in about 1450 CE), who pursued multiple fields of studies. Perhaps the quintessential renaissance man of this period was Leonardo da vinci, who was a master of art, an engineer, an anatomy expert (for the time), and also pursued many other disciplines with great success and aplomb.

In my opinion the renaissance had 5 main effects. During the renaissance there were many advances in in science art literature religion and ideas. After the crusades Europe as a whole became very open to new ideas setting the basis for the renaissance. With this new mind set came literature, before then literature in Europe was almost non existent with the invention of the printing press people could share ideas, also with the printing press came mass production of bibles for the first time in historian. with this new mindset and access to the bible people began to second guess the church and its teaching and were able to develope there own perceptions. During the Middle ages the region was exclusively controlled by the Catholic church. this control also governed art. This meant all painting were strictly religious and the perception of human form very mutilated because of man's sinful nature. However the Renaissance brought about a new twist on Greek and Roman art which made completely transformed art giving artists freedom of creativity. Lastly science with the trade and openness to new ideas came the desire for knowledge with the boom of trade new ideas from around the world were coming together and some of the worlds greatest minds appeared and transformed out outlook and knowledge of science and the world around us.
The ideal individual strove to master almost every area of study. A man who excelled in many fields was praised as a "universal man." Later ages called such people "Renaissance men."

A Renaissance man is well-rounded, possessing a wide range of knowledge, skills, and interests in areas such as art, literature, science, and philosophy. They are versatile, creative, and innovative, able to excel in multiple fields and adapt to different challenges and opportunities. Additionally, they are curious, open-minded, and always seeking to expand their understanding of the world.
Art during the renaissance (which means "rebirth") reflected the values of that time because it show cased high realism, ideal beauty, and harmony and balance. Body proportions were explored as people became more accepting to science. Leonardo da Vinci was 'the renaissance man' because he explored everything, from literature, to science, to the arts, to mathematics. During this time, people of the renaissance were looking at themselves as people and humanism became their focus. Their art glorified man, by showing ideal beauty.
