In the Caste System, you may not move between the stages. You are born as what you will stay.
I don't know that I would call it ancient because although it is technically illegal it is still going on. But to answer your question; the caste system slotted people into certain categories. At the top where the Bramins (the priests) and at the bottom were the untouchables. The priests were living in luxury and oppulence, they had anything and everything they wanted and every thing was done for them by other people. The untouchables were just that, untouchable. Even the person who cleared away the pooh from the toilets looked down on an untouchable. It was a very ridgid system and if you were born an untouchable so were your children. You and they could NEVER change caste. Each caste had a set job and HAD to do that job or starve. The people who wove a certain type of basket with one plant were different from the people who wove a different kind of basket from a different plant. People of different castes were not encouraged to intermarry and those that did became part of the lower cast. There were castes who fished, those that swept the roads, those that cared for the children, those that milked the cows, there were those that removed the rubbish and those that collected the taxes. Every job had a caste that did it and ONLY people from that caste did that job. To this day the caste system exists and I once saw an untouchable kick a football back to a child from a higher caste and his mother ran out and wouldn't allow him to even touch the ball EVER again.
It's sad really and to think that in the 21st century it still goes on is shameful.

So..... you wanna know how the Indian caste system is different to the American class system. Here, I'll help you. The Indian caste system, or varna came about when the Aryans began speaking nomadic groups came to India about 1500 BC. The Aryan priests divided society into a caste system with four parts. The priests( Brachmins) were the highest varna, the second caste was Kshatriyas, or rulers and warriors. Third in ran was the vaisyas( farmers, craftspeople and traders.) and the lowest ranking was the sudras and they were the workers and servants. People couldn't change their caste. They had to marry and socialize with people from their own caste. In the United States class is determined by how much wealth you have, not usually by your occupation. The 3 classes are upper class, middle class, and lower class. Most Americans fall into middle class or lower class with the very wealthiest people in the upper class. In American society, you aren't forced into one class. Our system is not based on religion like the caste system is. Hope that answers your question!! And i hope somebody answer the question to this. Compare the Indian caste system to the American class system.
