Cavendish was patronised by Lord Hunsdon, the cousin of the Queen, for his 1586 circumnavigation. For the earlier 1585 voyage he undoubtedly had the support of Walter Ralegh. Behind the Scenes he was backed by Francis Walsingham, the Queen's Secretary. However most of the finance for his part in the 1585 expedition came from sale or mortgage of his vast Suffolk and Lincolnshire lands. The 1586 voyage was also largely financed by himself, and his last voyage (1591-2) had mixed financial backing: his lands, money raised by friends and family, and from his fellow-explorers. He sailed for himself!
