Giovanni Da Verrazzano was an Italian explorer who sailed under the French flag. He was born in Tuscany, Italy in 1485. He "discovered" New York Harbor, being the first European to sail there. The strait between Staten Ilsand and Brooklyn is named the Verrazzano Narrows after him. The Verrazzano Narrows Bridge spanning that waterway opened in 1964. -- Contributed by Ray Kovach, Chicago, IL
