The man in the iron mask was a name given to a prisoner known as Eustache Dauger around 1669. The only facts about the man were contained in letters between his jailer and the superiors he reported to. He was in the custody of the same jailer for 34 years and died in 1703. He was then identified as Marchioli. No one saw his face since it was continuously hidden behind a black velvet mask. Voltaire claimed the prisoner wore an iron mask because he was the older, illegitimate brother of Louis XIV. Alexandre Dumas wrote a literary classic about the case and it has been adapted into various films.
