Many colonists thought of the war as ''biting the hand that feeds them". The olive branch petition showed that many leaders did not want to fight, but when England ignored us most colonists knew it was time for war.

Some people remained loyal to Great Britain. They were born British citizens and saw no reason to change. Many of these had property and were afraid to lose this property. However there were some afraid to lose their lives from the patriots. The patriots were known to pour boiling oil and feathers on loyalists.

Well there were two different sides people took in the matter of independence. If they wanted it, they were called Patriots. People who sided with England, were called Loyalists. Loyalists often didn't approve of the war because they thought the Patriots reasons for rebelling were not great enough. Others were simply not angry enough at the British to risk a war. And some believed Britain, being so much bigger and well trained than colonial militia, was going to win the war. These people in the previous sentence may or may not have secretly agreed with the Patriots, but because they wanted to gain favor with Britain after they thought they would win, they didn't publicly support the cause.

There was a conflict of opinions by Americans over the French Revolution. Many people were opposed to monarchies and at first were expecting perhaps that France would become something like the USA had become. Then there was a conflict because although Americans loved freedom, those who had memories had to understand that without the help of the French King Louis Xvi, the American Revolution may have failed. Many Americans who had first supported the French Revolution were then changed with regards to their support. When it became known that the revolution in France was controlled by ruthless criminals, bent on bloodshed and power for themselves, their support faded.

Because, they felt certain that they would lose. Most of them figured that a new Republic would eventually become a monarch itself. So, they didn't really think it was worth fighting for.
