The Earth was the center of the universe and the "heavenly bodies", such as the moon, sun, planets and stars, rotated in their own spheres around the Earth in a pattern. The order of spheres from Earth outward are:

  1. Moon
  2. Mercury
  3. Venus
  4. Mars
  5. Jupiter
  6. Saturn
  7. Fixed stars
  8. Sphere of Prime Mover

A model which showed that Earth was the center of the Universe
The Ptolemaic model of the universe was that the Earth was the center of the solar system and all the other planets revolved around it, including the Sun. The nine concentric spheres of his model followed this order (from innermost to outermost sphere): Earth (unmoving in the center), Mercury, Venus, the Moon, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the fixed Stars, and the Primum mobile. The Ptolemaic model of the universe also included epicycles. Epicycles were small circles or sphere on which each planet moved. These epicycles moved on a larger sphere called a deferent. It was assumed that the stars moved on a celestial sphere around the outside of the planetary spheres.

The Ptolemaic system of the universe is the most influential of the geocentric cosmological theories. It places the earth motionless at the center of the universe with all celestial bodies revolving around it.

(It was named for the Greco-Egyptian astronomer Ptolemy. The system dominated Astrology until the heliocentric system in the 16th century, created by the Polish astrologer Copernicus.)
